ANAZC Day Commemoration Service
Memorial Park, Hamilton
10:00 am Wednesday 25 April 2012
Five Student Leaders represented our school at this service (Blake, Te Kirika, Beth, Maddy and Courtney).
Te Kirika and Courtney presented the wreath and laid it at the foot of the cenotaph, while the rest of us watched on under the rather hot, bright, sunny sky.
A special thanks to the parents who attended. It was also nice to see other students of Bankwood School there with their families.
Thank you to the staff who also supported the Student Leaders (Mrs Cleaver, Miss Winter, Miss Cowie, Mrs Walker and Mrs M).

Food and Nutrition Students From Waikato Diocesan School for Girls
On Monday 7th May, Brooke, Nicole, Ella and Robin from Dio came and gave a 45 minute presentation on nutrition. These Year 13 students had an NZCEA internal assessment requirement and chose to explore a current nutrition issue in NZ society.
Children's health in NZ is becoming a huge issue due to many factors and children are arriving at school with vast amounts of energy-dense foods in their lunchboxes.
The students talked to a selected group of Y5/6 children about high salt, sugar and fat in foods and presented a PowerPoint showing these foods. They also talked about healthier food suggestions that should include:
# 5+ A Day (fruit and vegetables)
# low fat dairy products
# Lean meats
Here are several photos of their visit.

At the end of the talk the children were given a guideline sheet to take home. The sheet was to help the children prepare a more healthier lunchbox. Here is the do's and don'ts of lunchbox foods.
| What to put in your lunchbox |
Lunchbox Do’s
Provide two pieces of fruit as fruits contain essential minerals and vitamins.
Try to provide a source of calcium per day, such as a yogurt to ensure the development of strong bones and teeth.
Provide at least one source of complex carbohydrates which will provide your child with long lasting energy. A good idea is multigrain bread in a sandwich instead of white bread, which is also high in fibre.
Try to give one source of protein to aid the growth and development of muscles. This could be in the form of nuts or ham in a sandwich.
Make sure your child takes a bottle of water to school to keep them hydrated and focused in class.
Lunchbox Don’ts
Avoid foods high in saturated fat and sodium such as potato chips which should only be eaten as a treat food and not every day.
Try not to put cakes, biscuits and sweets in your child’s lunch everyday as these foods are extremely high in sugar and will only provide your child with a short burst of energy, leaving them tired and unable to concentrate in class.
Provide water instead of energy drinks and juices as they contain a high level of sugar.
Y5/6 Rippa Rugby Tournament
Last Wednesday our two Rippa teams played in the Hamilton Rippa Tournament.
Many thanks go to Tracey and Rana for coaching these two teams.
Here are some photos of their day.

Bike Wise Programme with selected Y5/6 Children
A small selected group of senior children are learning safe biking skills with Amy From Sport Waikato. The children bring their bikes to school each Tuesday for four weeks.
Here are some of their skills.

Kauri's visit to MOTAT in Auckland
The purpose of our visit to MOTAT was to learn about the technological changes in the household over the past 100 years.
Melissa, our Educator helped us learn about these changes and gave us the opportunity to try some hands-on daily household chores. Can you work out what the chores are?
We had 18 fabulous parent helpers with us, who also got the opportunity to have a go at the hands-on activities.
Here are photos of our fabulous day.
